What is The Photo Stick?
It wasn’t that long ago that you needed to carry a camera with you to capture all the important moments in your life. Though many replaced their old film cameras with digital cameras, now most people have a good quality camera built into their phone. Whether it’s a vacation that you take with someone special or your child’s birthday party, you want to record those moments and look back on them in the future.
Anyone who’s lost or broken their phone will know the importance of regularly transferring the images and videos to their computer, but many will have suffered a hard drive failure, resulting in the permanent loss of those precious memories.
A hard drive failure can cause you to lose all the important photographs that you saved over the years. While many people back up their data, at least 40% of people experienced some type of hard drive failure. Whether the fan on your computer stopped working or your pet knocked your laptop on the ground, it’s easy to lose all those files that you wanted to keep.As stated in this article, you can browse your selection of available deals on smartphones and top brands and explore the cell phone service plans that best suit your needs.
The Photo Stick is easy to use because it automatically scans for different file types. It also has software that can find lost images hidden in folders that you aren’t aware are on your computer. Our review of The Photo Stick review looks at why this gadget is so helpful and why it may or may not be the best solution for you.
With The Photo Stick, you can save all the important videos and photos that you take to share with the next generation.
How Does Photostick Work?
Using The Photo Stick is as easy as using an ordinary flash drive such as those you used for school and work assignments. It features a similar design with a USB body that you can plug into an open port. As long as you turn on your computer and let it boot up and run, you’ll have no problem using the Photo Stick. Just follow these steps to quickly backup all your photos and videos.:
- Locate an available USB port somewhere on your computer
- Make sure that the stick faces up before you plug it into the port
- Wait for your computer to identify the device
- Look at the window the appears in the middle of your screen
- Click on the green “Go” button to tell the device to run
The Photo Stick is very easy to use. It automatically scans your computer to find all the files with video or image extensions and formats. The Photo Stick then moves copies of those files to the stick. This creates a backup that you can use later and also gives you copies that you can access on other devices. It typically takes around 60 seconds for the device to finish scanning.
A nice feature is that it removes duplicate files when The Photo Stick notices which files it saved before.
Once you press the ‘Go’ button, The Photo Stick will immediately scan for new files to add.
How Many Photos Can You Save?
The simple answer is that it depends on which model you buy and the size of your photo and video files.
The Photo Stick 8 offers 8 GB of storage, which is enough for storing up to 3,500 photos. The 64 model has 64 GB of storage and can hold up to 30,000 photos. You’ll also find The Photo Stick 128, which is the largest model available. It can hold up to 60,000 photos and offers 128 GB of storage space.
These calculations are based on an estimated average size of 2MB per file. So one thing to keep in mind as you read The Photo Stick review is that the amount of storage you get depends on the size of your files. Though most models will store at least 3,500 pictures, they will hold fewer videos. Video files are larger in size and will take up more space. You’ll get less space if you store a number of larger documents or songs on your The Photo Stick too.
It’s also important that you keep in mind the size of your computer’s hard drive. If you have a larger hard drive with more saved documents, you may want to go with one of the large models.
Where Can You Use it?
One of the biggest advantages of The Photo Stick is that you can use it anywhere. You might find that the computers you use at work need a serious upgrade. Former coworkers likely downloaded apps and games that they used at work and on breaks. All the space that those programs take up reduces the space that you have for other documents and files. Instead of going through every file and risking deleting things that you need, you can plug in this stick and have room for all the files that you need on a project.
It’s also great for group projects at school. You might find that the other students on your team can only meet at certain times and only on-campus. With The Photo Stick, you can save the work that you do at school and the changes that you made at home to show them what the project looks like. You don’t need to worry about the operating system that the school lab uses or worrying about losing the project if your laptop dies.
The Photo Stick is compatible with Windows 7, 8, 10, Vista and XP. You can also use it on a Mac as long as it has an operating system of 10.6 or higher.
The Photo Stick works on most computers and has a compact design that makes it easy to pass off to other members of your team.
Photostick Testing
We wanted to get our hands dirty and see how the Photostick performed in real tests. Anyone can read the manufacturer’s site and see what it does, but how many reviews give you an idea of the experience that you might have? Not only did we put this little stick through multiple rounds of testing, but we asked others on our team to try it out. We know that some people have different experiences, which is why we asked several people to try it. Our Photostick review includes all of the feedback that we got from them.

Delivery and initial thoughts
I live in Europe and have experienced fairly long waiting times for items coming from the US before, so I was expecting around a 30 day delivery time. I was pleased when the photo stick arrived just 10 days after ordering – this is honestly great for a product being sent from the US – and it didn’t have any customs or import fees added.
The packaging was sufficient – a padded envelope – and there was no damage to the contents when I opened it.
The blister pack that The Photo Stick arrived in is easy to open, so there was no need to look for a pair of scissors. This may seem like a very minor point but difficult to open blister packs do annoy me.
Build Quality, Durability, and Feel
As with any electronics, you want something that can withstand daily life and not fall apart in your hands. The Photo Stick has a fairly lightweight feel with thin plastic, but doesn’t feel flimsy or like it would easily break. I wouldn’t recommend doing too much vigorous testing but it’s durability is certainly adequate for it to be thrown into a bag for a trip, so long as you don’t drop it into a puddle.
The Photo Stick measures just under three inches by a little more than half an inch and weighs less than an ounce. One thing to keep in mind is that it has a cap that fits on the end to protect the USB plug. It’s easy to lose track of this piece, especially if you put it down for a few minutes while you work on the computer or if you leave the room. At the other end is a little keyring style clip so you can attach it to your keys, purse, etc.
The Photo Stick has a nice and lightweight size for a comfortable fit.
What It's Like to Use?
The Photo Stick looks similar to any other USB stick, but comes with preinstalled software that does all the work of finding and saving your photos. Whilst it’s not that hard to install this software yourself, it would take a while to set it up properly if you know what you’re doing, and if not then it would be quite a hassle.
On my first use, I plugged The Photo Stick into my laptop and my antivirus did a quick scan and told me everything was fine.
The Photo Stick didn’t autorun on my laptop, but that’s probably a setting I’ve changed at some point, as I saw there is an autorun icon when I opened the drive.
Once you’ve opened The Photo Stick’s software, choose either automatic or manual scanning – I chose automatic and it got going scanning my laptop for images and videos. The scan took around half an hour to go through every folder on my computer and find the images and videos. This was on a pretty old laptop so there were a lot of files. When it finished, it told me there were 8549 files, requiring 20.49GB of space. The Photo Stick I was using for this review was the 8GB version, so I was interested to see what would happen to the rest of the files, I clicked continue and it got to work saving my photos and videos.
After about 2 hours a message popped up that it had run out of space. I clicked ok and took The Photo Stick over to my main computer to check the results.
I quickly realized that I should have chosen manual set up at the beginning, as The Photo Stick had found a lot of useless images from old games etc. along with some movies that had taken up a lot of space. I deleted everything and went back to my laptop to start again.
A couple of hours later it was done again, this time without the movies. It was nice to see all the old photos I’d forgotten were on that computer.
The biggest downfall to The Photo Stick is the lack of a waterproof cover.
Performance
I found that the Photo Stick performed really well. It’s a simple concept – it just scans your computer for photos and videos and saves them on the stick. It took about the amount of time I’d expect to scan my entire laptop, and after I’d set it up to ignore my movie folders it came back with lots of my old photos.
The one drawback I found was that 8GB isn’t really enough if you have a few years worth of photos. I’d recommend going for the 64 or 128GB version. The price is pretty good if you’re going to use it a few times, as it would take a long time to manually find all the photos and videos and save them to a USB stick.
Overall I’m very happy with The Photo Stick and can easily recommend it as a quick and easy backup solution.
Multiple users liked the way The Photo Stick performed through different tests.
Cloud Backup
If you’re pretty tech savvy then it’s not that difficult to set up automatic cloud backups from your phone, so you don’t even need to transfer files to your PC, and can access them from anywhere, which is massively convenient. The problem with this is that you never really know how private or secure your photos and videos are. Barely a week goes by without you hearing about a data breach with some company in which customer data is looted. This can’t happen with The Photo Stick, as all your files are stored on the stick itself and not on some server somewhere.
Most cloud backup solutions also require a subscription, which will quickly pass the single cost of The Photo Stick.
Thanks to cloud backup, you don’t need to worry about losing your favorite images.
Testing Methodology
We spent a few weeks passing The Photo Stick back and forth among our team and seeing how the features worked. Our methodology included testing how well it held up to minor amounts of water such as splashes from a coffee mug and using it outside around the morning dew. One of our top tests checked how well it performed on different systems, including both computers running different versions of Windows and Mac setups.
Our tests found that it worked better on Windows 10 and newer Mac computers than it did on XP and Vista setups. We also experimented with different cloud storage sites and found that it worked equally well on most of them. Our team especially liked how quickly it paired with OneDrive on Windows systems. Many of our team members liked that they could use it on and in their bags without worrying that they might lose The Photo Stick.
The Photo Stick kept up with our team through multiple indoor and outdoor tests.
Common Causes of Hard Drive Failure
Anyone who has children knows the amount of accidents that can happen. You might have read horror stories of parents who have children who ran through the house and tripped and fell over a computer cord, sending the machine crashing to the ground and destroying the hard drive. However, adults are prone to just as many computer accidents, especially those who eat or drink as they use their electronics. You might knock over a can of soda while in the middle of a game and watch in horror as that sticky substance spreads across your keyboard. Any type of moisture can cause a hard drive failure that runs your computer.
Another common cause of a hard drive failure is a fan failure. Every computer has an internal fan that keeps the components cool. If you have multiple tabs or windows open, you might hear your fan kick on to regulate the internal temperature. The fan will also run if you have limited disk drive space or when you play a game that requires a lot of CPU space. Some other reasons you might suffer from a hard drive failure include:
- Excessive temperatures or temperature changes, including cold or heat
- Certain types of damage that affects the case
- Power failures and surges
- Moisture damage
The Photo Stick saves copies of all the photos and videos on your computer and gives you backups if your hard drive fails.
What Files Can The Photo Stick Find?
Have you ever uploaded photos to your computer from your phone and forgot to change the file names before saving them? Most systems will assign a name to those photos that include numbers. If you need to find a specific photo later and can’t remember the name assigned to it or the date that you took it, you may have a hard time locating that image from various folders.
The Photo Stick can locate any photos saved on your hard drive and create backups.
The Photo Stick works automatically on standard JPEG files. It will also search for files saved in MPEG4 and MOV formats such as videos. You can change the settings and have it search for other file types such as PNG photos too. Many images you download from the web or those you edit may use this format.
It also locates raw files saved on your system. Depending on the type of digital camera that you use, you might find that it saves files in a raw format which will be of higher quality (and file size) that you can more easily edit later.
The Photo Stick can save most image types such as JPEG, PNG, TIF, CRW, NRW and KDC, along with the photoshop formats PSD and PDD.
The Photo Stick finds original and edited copies of your photos, including those you edited with popular software such as GIMP, Photoscape, Snapseed, Pixlr and PhotoDirector.
Who's This for?
Even if you never suffered a hard drive failure yourself, you probably know someone who has. Experts recommend that you backup your hard drive on a regular basis. Not only can you save your files to an external hard drive or a flash drive, but you can also backup your system in the cloud. As long as you recall your username and password, you can view your files in the cloud later.
The Photo Stick is a solid tool for those who usually forget to back up their systems. You can actually leave it plugged into a USB port and set up future reminders. This lets you know when you need to back up your photos and videos. The Photo Stick can automatically scan and backup those files on a date that you pick too.
I’m comfortable recommending The Photo Stick to anyone who wants to reduce the risk of losing their photos, even if you have limited computer skills. If you’re like most people, your computer probably has copies of vacation photos and pictures that you took on special occasions.
The cost of salvaging files from a fried or damaged hard drive can be quite high, and sometimes it’s just impossible. The Photo Stick provides a simple solution to backing up your photos and videos at a very reasonable price. As The Photo Stick goes anywhere you go, you can take it on vacation to make sure that you have backups before heading home.
As The Photo Stick goes anywhere you go, you can take it on vacation to make sure that you have backups before heading home.
Signs of a Hard Drive Failure
As soon as The Photo Stick arrives in the mail, you can run it on your computer and make backup copies of all your files. You may want to take a few minutes to read about the signs of a hard drive failure first. This ensures that you know what to keep an eye on to get help before the system fails.
A common sign is a loud noise that comes from the computer. Many people heard what sounded like a humming noise that grew louder as they kept using it. Others heard a clicking noise that got louder as well as feeling vibrations coming from the computer. Some of the other signs that might indicate an upcoming failure include:
- You see warning signs in the form of pop-up windows
- The computer runs very slowly or stops responding to your commands
- It can no longer run certain apps and programs without crashing
- The computer turns itself off without asking for permission, even if you updated it recently
The Photo Stick makes it easy to save files before a hard drive failure occurs. Not only does it scan to find files, but it ignores files that it saved before unless you recently made changes to ensure that you don’t have dozens of duplicates taking up space on the drive.
It takes less than one minute to set up The Photo Stick and run it on your computer to prevent major losses due to a hard drive failure.
Money Back Guarantee
The developers behind The Photo Stick know that some shoppers might not like it as much as others do. If the product fails to meet your expectations, you can request a refund from the company that makes it.
One issue we have with this refund is that it only covers manufacturing errors. That refers to issues such as a stick that didn’t work when you plugged it in or one that worked once and then never worked again. It does not cover buyer’s remorse such as buying it and then deciding that you don’t need it.
The manufacturer also requires that the product is in good condition and in its original packaging. If you threw away the packaging, you may have a hard time getting your refund. Some of The Photo Stick user reviews we read claimed that the manufacturer charged customers for return shipping. Those who returned it found that they had to pay the cost to ship it back out of their own pockets.
The 60-day money-back guarantee starts on the day that the stick ships from the warehouse. Most shoppers received their orders in a week or less, which gives you nearly two months to try it out before requesting a refund.
Tips for Requesting a Refund
- Gather the Photostick and all packaging
- Write down the reasons you want a refund
- Contact the manufacturer over the phone or online
- Package the Photostick and all materials together
- Return the full package back to the manufacturer
The Photo Stick Mobile
The makers of The Photo Stick also make some other interesting gadgets and tools that you can use. One option is The Photo Stick mobile. This is an app that works for your phone and with the associated USB stick.
Though The Photo Stick mobile looks similar to the classic PhotoStick, it comes with an extra end that fits into a phone. The manufacturer knows that newer phones do not have space for a USB port and offers tools that will fit in the port that your phone has. It can backup thousands of pictures and gives you a safe place to store your files. You can get The Photo Stick mobile for Android and for iPhones.
You can pick from different sizes that include up to 64 GB of storage.
There is also a device called The Photo Stick Plus, which looks like an external hard drive and comes with a USB plug. It has one terabyte of storage and can hold up to 100,000 photos or a large combination of videos and other files. The Plus model is more expensive than the standard model though and may have more space than you need.
The makers of The Photo Stick now offer a product that is compatible with mobile devices

Where to Buy The Photo Stick
The best place to buy The Photo Stick is from the official website and our link. This makes sure you get the best price and take advantage of special deals that you won’t find on Amazon and other websites that sell this stick. When we checked in April 2024, we found the following prices:
- Get the 8GB PhotoStick for only $34.99 and have room for up to 3,500 videos and photos
- Buy the 64GB PhotoStick for $49.99 to save up to 30,000 photos and videos
- Get the 128GB PhotoStick and backup up to 60,000 videos and photos for just $79.99
No matter what size you buy, you have the option of adding a second stick to your order and getting 40% off that device. This drops the price to $20.99 for the 8GB model and $29.99 for the 64GB model. If you go with the 128GB version of The Photo Stick, you can buy a second device for only $47.99. Buying from the official website also gives you a 60-day money-back guarantee and fast shipping. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the manufacturers got orders shipped to addresses in the United States in as little as 10 days.
Should You Buy it?
We want you to feel confident in trusting us when it comes to new tech tools and gadgets. Our team has years of experience in rigorously testing and reviewing tech products such as The Photo Stick. We worked together to create this list of The Photo Stick pros and cons.
Pros
User Friendly
Depending on how old you are, you either grew up with computers or only learned how to use those devices later in life. Those who came of age during the 1990s and later can use a computer just as easily as they can brush their teeth or make a phone call. Their parents and grandparents, however, might look at computers with scepticism and worry about making mistakes that cause the systems to stop working.
The Photo Stick has an extremely user-friendly design that makes it perfect for any user that has even the most basic computer experience. As long as you can locate a USB port, you can use this stick to back up your treasured memories. You won’t need an internet connection to make the The Photo Stick work.
Compatible with Most Computers
The Photo Stick is compatible with nearly every computer on the market. It runs on both and Windows computers without any problem. It even runs on older Windows XP and Vista computers.
The Photo Stick is easier to use and compatible with more computers than ordinary flash drives are.
Works with Most Formats
Video and picture files can use a variety of formats and file extensions. You probably already know about JPEG and similar formats that photos use as well as the GIF format that is popular with the small clips you watch on the internet.
We like that The Photo Stick scans your computer to find all files that use a format or extension that shows it is a photo or video file. If you dream of becoming a professional photographer and save photos in a raw format, the stick will still locate them. It does a good job of finding files that you lost or forgot about that are on your hard drive too.
Automatic Scanning
Using an ordinary flash drive or external hard drive to backup your computer can take a lot of your precious time. You need to remember where you saved files in each folder or spot on the system and try to recall the names that you used too. It can take hours to go through your system and still won’t guarantee that you found all those files.
The Photo Stick is much easier to use because it automatically scans your system. It will tell you how many folders it scanned and the number of files found. When you use The Photo Stick in the future, it will tell you how many duplicates it found and the number of new files that it saved.
Thanks to its automatic scanning, The Photo Stick can find files that you forgot about hidden deep in your hard drive.
Lots of Storage Space
For less than $40, you can get the 8GB stick and have space for around 3,500 photos. Going up a step lets you get the room for up to 30,000 files for less than $50. We recommend the 128GB for those who want to make sure that they can store a lot of photos and videos or want to backup photos in raw formats. While this stick sells for around $80, it can hold up to 60,000 photos and videos.
Photos and Videos
Far too many people look at the name and assume that The Photo Stick only saves photos. It does just as good of a job saving any video files found on your hard drive.
Let’s say that you want to create a video that highlights the best moments of your parents’ anniversary party. With this stick, you can save the individual clips that you took as well as the edited video that you want to share with your loved ones. You can also use it to save the original photos that you took and the edited copies that you made to share and slideshows that you made from those images and a music file.
The Photo Stick is handy for on the go editing and working away from home.
Low Price
We highly recommend checking out the official site and viewing the current offers. Those offers slash the price by up to $80 off the original retail price when you buy the 128GB model. You can save even more when you buy multiple sticks because the site reduces the price of each additional stick by 40%.
No matter what extensions and formats you use, The Photo Stick can identify and locate all relevant files on your system.
Cons
The Photo Stick does not come with any instructions. The manufacturer claims that it’s intuitive and that anyone can use it.
Most customers won’t have any problems plugging it in or doing a quick scan/backup, but some may have problems when it comes to customizing the features. It can take a bit of trial and error before you understand how all the features and settings work.
Most shoppers found that the pros of The Photo Stick outweigh the cons.
The Competition
The most common competitor to The Photo Stick is the ordinary flash drive. If you search for flash drives on Amazon or any other online shop, you’ll find thousands of results. There are also external hard drives. External models typically have more storage space than flash drives do. We’ll go over some of the competitors and how they compare to The Photo Stick to help you decide if how this little tool really stacks up against the competition.
Samsung FIT Plus 3.1 128GB Flash Drive
With this 128GB flash drive from Samsung, you get all the storage space that you need. It has room for photos and videos as well as music files and documents that you want to save. A nice feature of this flash drive is that it’s compatible with laptops and desktops as well as tablets and other electronics. Though it does cost less than The Photo Stick, it doesn’t have the same scanning capabilities. You’ll need to plug in the flash drive and manually select the files that you want to save to it. Though Samsung claims that it works in just 10 seconds, many found that it ran slower.
Picture Keeper 4GB
Another alternative to the Photo Stick is the Picture Keeper 4 GB, which is a type of portable flash drive. Unlike standard flash drives that require you to do a lot of work, this one functions like The Photo Stick does and will create instant backups for you. It works with an app that you need to download to your computer and give permission to run. As soon as you have that app downloaded though, you can plug the flash drive into your USB port and let it run. It will perform a full search and backup all the photos and videos on your hard drive.
Picture Keeper does a good job of saving files and remembering where it left off. When you do a future scan, it will recall where it left off instead of starting over again, which can save you some time.
The main downside to Picture Keeper is that it only has 4 GB of memory space. As it costs around half of what The Photo Stick does though, you can actually get two flash drives and have the same 8 GB of memory found on that gadget. Picture Keeper lets you easily print off copies of your favorite pictures though and also gives you a share option. This makes it easy to share your saved photos with loved ones. You can also tag your photos based on where you took them or who is in each image. This gives you a convenient way to store your images and to search for them later. You can search for photos based on the date and time you took each one too.
While The Photo Stick and Picture Keeper are pretty similar, Picture Keeper comes with an app that you must download before using the device. The Photo Stick comes with the software that you need already inside. Picture Keeper is available in a few different sizes, including 16 GB and 32 GB. The Photo Stick does not have a 32 GB option. When it comes to the larger models, you’ll find that The Photo Stick is more affordable than Picture Keeper.
SUNSWAN 3.0 USB Flash Drive
If you want a simple tool that you can use with all the phones and computers in your family, you might prefer the SUNSWAN 3.0 Flash Drive. As soon as you look at this model, you’ll notice that it’s significantly different from other flash drives you used in the past. This drive actually looks like a small cross because it features four ends that extend out from the center. Each end is compatible with a different type of device or operating system. It works just as well with an iPhone as it does with an Android phone, but you can also use it with a Windows computer or a Mac.
This tool also functions as a photo stick because you can plug it right into a device and transfer files over. While it’s a good tool for transferring photos between two or more devices, it also allows you to create backups of all your valuable and important files. It is compatible with all file types too. One thing you may need to keep in mind though is that you’ll need the right drivers to play those files on other devices. It does not work on iTunes files because that format is proprietary to Apple.
When you compare this flash drive to a Photo Stick, you’ll find that you can set up and use the The Photo Stick faster. The Photo Stick does not require the use of any apps, but this flash drive asks that you download and install an app to it before using it for the first time. The flash drive has more memory space and costs less than The Photo Stick. If you have an older computer though, you may find that this flash drive does not work with that device. The Photo Stick is compatible with some of the operating systems used during the 1990s and earlier.
We also wanted to do a quick comparison between The Photo Stick and external hard drives. External hard drives have a cord that you insert into a USB port. Some models have a cord that you can remove and replace for using it with different ports. There is a risk that you might lose that cord though. While external hard drives often have more memory space, they also take up more room. The Photo Stick is small enough in size that you can carry it between work and home or home and school. Though it won’t work with the same gaming consoles that external hard drives do, you can use The Photo Stick with almost any computer or phone.
Flash drives and external hard drives can help you back up your system
Final Verdict
No matter how careful you are, the simplest of accidents can lead to a catastrophic hard drive failure. A guest might knock over a glass of water onto your computer, or you might drop your laptop when you lose your balance on the stairs. Hard drive failures can also occur because of a virus or because the hardware on your computer died. Some viruses can actually take over your entire operating system and prevent you from accessing your files.
The Photo Stick is a handy tool that anyone can use. As long as you have a USB port on your device, you can plug it right in and begin backing up all your files. If your system ever fails, you’ll have copies of those files.
